Premier Mbhazima Shilowa launches the one number for all Government Services

Johannesburg - Premier Mbhazima Shilowa has successfully launched the 'one number for all' GPG services, 0860 GAUTENG - 0860 4288 368.

Through the new number members of the public will access to the following information:

  • Bana Pele - providing access to a package of services that benefit the province's poor children including social grants, health care and education
  • Driver and Learner's License bookings
  • Public transport information
  • Services and support for small businesses provided by the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller

The launch took place on the 19th of June 2006 in Wynberg near Alexandra. The occasion was also part of the official opening of the "three contact centre" satellite sites.

In line with our strategic priorities of enabling faster economic growth, creating employment, fighting poverty and building a caring and effective government; part of government's expansion plan is to locate the other two satellite sites in the economically depressed regions of the province.

Furthermore, the plan seeks to expand the contact centre capacity by a total of 600 seats by the end of this financial year. The two additional satellite sites will be located in Sedibeng and West Rand municipalities respectively.

The initiative is part of Government's e-government strategy. This strategy seeks to ensure that members of the public and anyone visiting the Gauteng Province have easier access to government services. The strategy provides a variety of channels through which government information can be accessed, these include:

  • The contact centre;
  • walk in centres, popularly known as Multi Purpose Community Centres (MPCC's);
  • 50 information kiosks will be set up in the community centres; and
  • digital lounges to be set up in Government departments

The envisaged growth in the contact centre industry is expected to create job opportunities, especially for out of school youth.

"We want Gauteng to be the breeding ground of skills for the contact centre industry" said Paul Mashatile - MEC for Finance and Economic Development.
