MEC: Paul Mashatile's Profile
Paul Shipokosa Mashatile was born in Geraldsville, Tshwane. He became President of the Alexandra Youth Congress in 1983 and was also active in the Congress of South African Students (Cosas). During this time he was also Assistant General Secretary of the UDF (Southern Transvaal).
After the unbanning of the ANC and SACP in 1990 he was appointed Interim Secretary of the SACP in Gauteng. He also served on the Interim Leadership Group of the ANC. Mashatile was appointed ANC Branch Organiser in Alexandra and Branch Chairperson for the SACP. In 1991 and 1992 he was Head of Political Education for the ANC in Gauteng and became Provincial Secretary of the ANC in 1992 until 1998, when he was elected deputy chairperson of the ANC in the province.
In 1994 he became a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and Leader of the House, in which capacity he served as a member of the Executive Council. In 1996 he was appointed MEC for Transport and Public Works, and in 1998, MEC for Safety and Security. From 1999 to 2004 he served as MEC for Housing until his appointment as MEC for Finance and Economic Affairs.
He is currently studying for a post-graduate diploma in Economic Principles at the University of London.
Mashatile is married to Manzi and has four children, Palesa, Tinyiko, Thabiso and Ayanda.
